An organizer for the hybrid office enviornment.

As office spaces adopt a more flexible way of working (e.g. shared desks, pods, & huddle spaces). We see an increased need for lockers to store personal supplies, as well as an item to help transport those supplies around the office.

What are people currently using...

Carrying in hands.

Pros:
  • Convenient
  • Doesn’t require any extra object to transport things around

Cons:
  • Your hands are occupied
  • Easier to drop supplies
  • No organization
  • Limited amount of supplies you can take with you

Carrying in tote/bag.

Pros:
  • You are able to carry more things at once
  • Safer way to transport laptop than carrying in hands
  • Bag allows you to express your personality

Cons:
  • Totes have little organization
  • Carrying a bag around can make it look like you are leaving the office
  • Where will I store this when I get to my destination

How might we create an organized way to transport supplies around the office without compromising efficiency or style.

inspiration.

I drew inspired from products that achieve functionality through simplicity. I want this product to include... Inviting materials - simple geometry - & versitile storage

ideation.

With research and inspiration in mind, I began sketching out concepts to try and dial in a form that fufilled the goals, & was visually compelling.

Mock-ups.

Figuring out a scale that balanced storage & ease of transportation was a large part of the early ideation process. The form, however, was utilitarian, most of the features shaped what this organizer looks like.

The early cardboard models made way for more detailed 3D printed models. This allowed me to test the design at my deskspace to see what worked, and what didn't.

The final design featured:

- a hard plastic shell that could provide privacy when sitting at a desk.
- 3 separate compartments for storage ( back slot for papers/laptop, a front tray for writing utensils/ commonly used objects, & a small drawer for personal goods/cords.)
- felted bottoms to reduce the noise of objects moving around.
- a wooden handle for ease of transportation
- small utilitarian details (drawer pull/exposed fastener for the handle.)

final design.

The final design features a two tone body to break up the otherwise plain faces.

The handle has a plastic core with wooden veneer wrapped around it.
